FAQ Friday #54 – The stitching on my boat cover is starting to rot, can you fix it or do I need a new cover?

FAQ Friday #54 – The stitching on my boat cover is starting to rot, can you fix it or do I need a new cover?

It’s not uncommon for the material boat covers are made from to have a warranty of 5-10yrs, but often the stitching breaks down well within this time. The reason for this is the thread doesn’t have the same level of good UV properties as the material.

When a cover has top stitching, it’s usually this that starts to go first, but if left too long the previously hidden stitching can then be exposed and begin to deteriorate and rot too. If this stitching also goes, in extreme cases it can become a jigsaw to put the cover back together again. It’s definitely best not to let your cover get to this stage!

So, what can be done about it?

Overstitching!

Overstitching covers, whether it’s a cockpit canopy, full RIB cover or seat covers is totally possible. It’s even common to overstitch a cover twice during its lifetime.

So why not let us give your cover another lease of life?

Here's a few close up "before" photos of two covers that are currently being laundered, having the windows replaced and being overstitched. I'll share the "after" photos once the work is complete.
